Synopsis 1999 to 2013
From 1999; when Mel Dare graduated with Honours in a Bachelor of Arts (Arts) at Curtin University of Technology, until 2013 the artist had five solo and two duo exhibitions. In 2005 she produced a body of work investigating masculinity called Looking at Him (emerge Art Space – Highgate, WA). Producing the solo exhibitions Intersecting moments (Verge Gallery – Northbridge, WA) and Surface [at]tension (Moores Building – Fremantle, WA) in 2001 which investigated the relationship between time. ideas and subjectivity. Between 2003 and 2005 Dare collaborated in two visual conversations with the artist Tori Benz which culminated in the exhibition The art of (good) conversation (Breadbox Gallery) and a residency at Perth Institute of Contemporary Art called Interplay.
Her work received 4 art awards and was selected for many group exhibitions including City of Joondalup (2009, 2007, 2004). Her work was acquired by Princess Margaret Hospital (2004), Jo Lagerberg Collection (2004) and Old Swan Brewery (2001). She was also an Art Gallery Co-Manager; Tutor for the Applecross Gifted and Talented Program as well as Bandyup and Nyandi prisons; an Art Gallery Assistant; in addition to being a Sessional Lecturer at Curtin University.
